I want all of you to do something when you finish reading this. Before I rant, I want all of you to go and look at screen shots for the upcoming Capcom Fighting Evolution or something similar to the title. Basically, look up Capcom's new 2D fighter. I want you to look at those graphics. LOOK HARD.
Jesus Christ why is Capcom still in business. I have lost all respect for that company.

Hmm... Being a die-hard Capcom fan, i thought i'd better stick up for 'em, so here's what i think.
To be honest, i'm very happy that Capcom are still making 2D fighting games at all, in these times of 3D domination. Not just Fighting Jam, but also Vampire Chronicles are on the cards to be released - when most of the gaming public is saying that the world is saying that 2D is dead and gone, they're putting time and effort into producing what could very well turn out to be losing ventures.
Having said that, if they were to produce another fighting game, where would they start that doesn't involve somebody saying that they're out of touch? I'm pretty much convinced that if they released another Street Fighter game, people would compain that it's an old franchise, and that it should have been left back in the '90s. The current trend in fighting games is to pit one company against each other, which is great - however, Capcom have pretty much run out of fighting games companies to contend with (Sammy looks to be the last one). So they've turned in on themselves, and combined their fighting games series' into one. And personally, i think that sounds fucking great, whatever the drawbacks are. I mean, think of the possibilities; you guys like Naruto and the way of the ninja - how about an all-ninja battle royale with Guy and Mukuro, for instance?
Myself, i haven't looked at many screenshots for Fighting Jam, but i've liked what i have seen. Maybe that's because i'm not used to the cream of graphical excellence of games like Guilty Gear Isuka - i don't know. But i'm sure you'll all agree that graphics don't make a game on their own, right?
Anyway, that's about it from me. I'm really loath to be posting this, because i don't want to offend anyone, but fighting games have a special place in my psyche - and as such, i feel i owe it to the genre to fight for them.

No problem.
Yes you are right, graphics do not make up a game. I agree, they don't.
HOWEVER.
Since they made SF3, don't you think that their games should look like that from now on? I mean, why go backward instead of forward? Sammy improves on it's graphics from the previous GG games (Excluing Isuka). Why the hell would the reuse and old ass sprite of Demitri instead of making a brand new one?!
There really is no good excuse for the low quality graphics. This is such a poor showing for Capcom, I really have lost all faith in them.

Interesting point, Red - why Capcom re-use old sprites, i don't know. I noticed this myself about the Morrigan sprite set - i don't think she's been redrawn since the first Night Warriors game, and is particularly noticeable in CVS2. Maybe the hardcore Japanese fans like the original design...
But back to the subject in hand, it is a very valid point. I'm not sure why the graphical quality in the new Capcom fighters isn't matching the calibre of Third Strike. Perhaps they got more people (or different ones) to work on Third Strike, seeing as it is one of their main franchises. What can i say?
In short, i can really see where you're coming from on this one, Red. We're both right on this; Capcom don't have an excuse to use lacklustre graphics, but perhaps they think that if you're the kind of gamer who plays 2D fighting games in the first place (we're a dying breed), then it doesn't matter what they look like (because we play for the fight, not for the art).
Thankyou for replying, by the way - i do like these types of discussions.

but perhaps they think that if you're the kind of gamer who plays 2D fighting games in the first place (we're a dying breed), then it doesn't matter what they look like (because we play for the fight, not for the art). If that was the case, then no other fighting game would improve in graphics. Really, 2D fighting games generate a large gathering during tournaments, and the companies that make these fighting games know this. If I play a game it's for both graphics AND gameplay. A company that doesn't balance it will get more complaints than praise. Check out GG. A lot of people were psyched about it, and not simply because of it's good gameplay, but it's awesome graphics. Sammy realizes this, and so it's not gonna let their franchise go low in the graphics department. Jesus, if Capcom is running out of ideas, they could always redo their Darkstalkers game. AND by redo, I mean make BRAND new, not RECYCLE!!!!

Interesting you should say that - Capcom are redoing their Darkstalkers game - it's called Vampire Chronicles, and it's coming out for the PSP.
Anyway, as for fighting games' graphics getting better and better, not everybody plays the games for both graphics and gameplay, like yourself. A large amount of people play the games because they follow the series, or like what the company have done in the past; i can't even roughly estimate how many people will be playing Fighting Jam because they liked Street Fighter 2 back in the day. It's not just Capcom, it happens in other places, too; for instance, the KOF games - there are no huge improvements from year to year, but people hang on because they like to 'keep their hand in', so to speak. If you want to grind it right to the knuckle, even Guilty Gear has had a variety of releases outside of the X series, using the same graphical set (obviously toned down and made less memory-intensive, but the principle stil applies).
I think what i'm trying to say is that Capcom aren't alone in what they're doing; perhaps they've seen the quality of the graphics produced by Sammy, and are just holding their hands up and saying 'we can't beat you in the graphics department, so we might as well concentrate on other parts of the game'. Which is a valid statement - Guilty Gear X2 has the most intricate graphics i've ever seen in a 2D fighting game, and no mistaking.
By the way, please say if i'm offending you with what i'm saying - i wouldn't want to cross swords with a fellow fighting gamer.

Crossing swords? Not at all, you're being very respectful, which I appreciate whole-heartedly.
As for Darkstalkers are you absolutely sure it's abrand new game and not just another port/recycling?
You make valid points. But I don't believe that Capcom really has thrown in the towel. Personally, the graphical flow or the movement flow in SF3 is better than that of Guilty Gear. Mark of The Wolves as well, has some damn good flow.
(Hope that made ANY sense.)
Again, I stick with my statements, Capcom is disappointing and lazy, same goes for SNK. They could do much better but choose not too for the life of me I don't know why.
I definitely won't be buying CFE. If SNK Colloseum is the same, I won't be buying it either.

That's cool - your points totally stand firm, and i'd be a fool to say otherwise. As for Capcom, i think they'll be around for a while yet. SNK? Well, there must be some money in the name, otherwise Playmore would have left them to die when they did the first time. I think your business sense is more sound than mine - i tend to view anything connected to my past with rose-tinted spectacles. ;D As regards Darkstalkers, i didn't explain enough - it is indeed a port (or rather, several mixed together) of Vampire Saviour with some added bits. And finally, Coliseum. Well, if it ever makes it's way here, i intend to buy it; i'd be a fool to pass on the opportunity of playing as Cyber Woo...

A port with added bits? *Sigh* Another recycled fighter released by Capcom.... Hey Capcom! How about a Marvel VS. Collection?! After all, you're making repeat games....
As for Colosseum........Hmmmmm............that game does have my favorite samurai. (Asura from Samurai Showdown. Most awesome looking samurai EVER!)

Colisieum looks good, if I'm not wrong Shiki is in it
also, you guys are making really good comments here, I'm glad this board is filled with people who respects each other
Though I'd like to say something about the SnK bit....I've pretty much asked around, and about KoF, people that likes it more to SF third strike n GG series have all spelled the same things, GG and SF are just too fast, and less strategic....which means literally most people who plays KoF very often don't excel in GG and SF when they start playing...and losing pretty much results in unhappiness...and KoF itself has such a huge fanbase they feel that they should continue competing with all the high competition out there...
It might only occur here in Asia, I do not know, but most KoF 2000+ machines are occupied by some of the most competitive people out there...it's the same in Taiwan and Hong Kong...and it's defenitely happening here in Singapore...the competition out there is alot more intense...
And Capcom itself has made products that keeps changing the style, the flow and the characteristics of their games which resulted in lesser competition in the newer games made...a good example is the 3D ver. of SF games....technically here in Asia there's not many out there willing to play it...though Darkstalkers are still a hit here...but the point it, Capcom, although with it's generated fanbase, I can easily believe it's unable to compete itself with SnK still, and like Red said, they've proved to everyone that they can do alot better than what they are doing now why stop and make it all a delusion for people all over the world?
I'm starting to believe if they keep this up they're gonna lose so badly to SnK in terms of Gameplay
