Hi folks. I thought I start my first thread here with a negative question. I'll try not to make it a habit ;D
I'd like to know what Animes you have felt the most disappointed/let down by?
Having got exited about it leading up to the release, I was particularly disappointed with "Kai Doh Maru".
I'd seen a trailer on some other Manga Entertainment DVD release and thought it looked rather good and I really liked Production I.G's "Last Vampire" so was expecting something of similar quality. However I was gutted after watching it. I thought the packaging was really nice and the animation lovely but what happened to the plot and story? When it first finished I thought there was another part to it as it ended rather abruptly and the info on the packaging rather misleadingly stated that the DVD was 80mins long. The film was more like 45m so I already felt short changed. It's not that i don't like short films either ('Last vampire' and 'Voices from a distant star' are both excellent examples of well done short anime IMO) but I felt cheated.
The most disappointing thing was the missed potential. The settings and characters were all good and ready for a really good mysterious tale, the animation was good too (the action scenes in it although short are rather good) and the story itself is fine but underdeveloped. I feel it deserved a longer length so the characters could be introduced better and be fleshed out properly and to enable the story line to develop at a more suitable pace. As it stands it feels anti climactic, rushed and half arsed - at least in the story dept.
I quite like the downbeat ending, it made for a more interesting film but the interwoven pasts of the characters and political background are so rushed through that it lacks any emotional punch or depth when really it should be tugging at the tear ducts.
All in all I was very disappointed as it could have be potentially a top anime.
Hey, ho, rant over.
